The railway track and stations on the Katlehong to Kwesine facility to the South East of Johannesburg was constructed in the 1980šs and vandalised by the local community in protest against the apartheid regime.
Following the successful change of government in 1994, the South African Rail Commuter Corporation was faced with the difficult task of re-instating and upgrading the rail service to commuters living in the former Townships surrounding Johannesburg.
The four railway stations between Kwesine and Katlehong were re-built to provide all necessary facilities for the commuters together with state of the art access control, allowing the operator to substantially improve on the previous cost recovery ratio of 5%.
Involving the community in the construction works was identified at the outset as one of the key success factors for the project. SARCC turned to Construction Management specialists ASA to ensure that small local companies were involved in all aspects of the project from bricklaying to community policing.
ASA worked closely with Intersite (facilitator), the South African Rail and Commuter Corporation (Owner), Metrorail (Operator) and the local community to ensure the satisfactory completion of this major project in a politically volatile environment.
The project was completed within budget and to the standards required by both the owner and operator, and is now being utilised by a grateful community.
